| Leatherhead
is an attractive Surrey town with a pedestrianised centre offering shoppers
a wide range of retail outlets, including major names such as Sainsburys,
Boots, Next, Dorothy Perkins etc. The centre hosts a popular twice weekly
street market as well as regular Craft and English Producers' markets.
Leatherhead Museum traces the history of the town from its beginnings in about 880 AD when it was known as Leodridan, (later in the Doomsday Book as Leddrede) - believed to have meant the place where people can ride across the river. The River Mole is a particularly attractive feature of the town, surrounded by Green Belt countryside, much of it designated as an Area of Outstanding National Beauty. Nearby are National Trust attractions such as Box Hill and the nationally-known mansion of Polesden Lacey. Leatherhead's location also means that London's bright lights and cultural scene and the Sussex coast are both easily reached.
