Leatherheads History

Leatherhead Museum traces the history of the town from its beginnings in about 880 AD when it was known as Leodridan, (later in the Doomsday Book as Leddrede). This is believed to have meant ‘The place where people can ride across the river'. The River Mole is a particularly attractive feature of the town, surrounded by Green Belt countryside, and much of it designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. National Trust attractions such as Box Hill and the nationally-known Polesden Lacey mansion are also located on the outskirts of the town.
