Leatherhead is one of the the main commercial centres of the Mole Valley District. In the last two decades Leatherhead's business community has grown dramatically, and continues to do so, with office and business park developments providing state-of-the-art accommodation for small to medium sized businesses. In addition to attracting small enterprises, entrepreneurs, specialist retailers and sole traders, the positioning of Leatherhead as a strategic location with excellent links to London, the M25 and Gatwick and Heathrow Airports, has been recognised by multi-national corporations and organisations that have expanded here or relocated to the town.

Unilever and The Police Federation have recently set up their headquarters here, joining other major businesses including Esso, Halliburton Brown and Root, Dunlop Slazenger, high tech companies Logica and ERA Technology and other international Research and Technology organisations. The influx of big businesses and affluent professionals has transformed the commercial landscape of the town, boosted the local economy and created opportunities for suppliers of professional business services, retailers and restaurateurs; particularly those offering up-market products and services.

With a buoyant local economy, the area's unemployment level is among the lowest in the UK, whilst studies by the Henley Centre have shown that the District performs well in terms of key drivers of economic growth such as industrial structure, quality of the labour force and social capital. The District Council also provides stable and balanced local government, with no one political faction exercising overall control. The continuous development of Leatherhead town centre and its leisure facilities also rank highly on the Council's priorities.
